| Question: Competitive ballet in the east bay? Posted: 12 Sep 2016 11:54 PM PDT If you want to become a professional ballet dancer you don't train in a competition school. Competition training is a thing unto itself and has no reference to what is required for a professional ballet career. Most people have no clue what it takes to become a professional ballet dancer. It is way more than just being slim and the right height. You must first be born with the right body which is a very specific bone and muscle structure. You could be thin as a pin and not have a ballet body. No amount of training no matter how young you start or how good it is can change these things. You have to be born that way and only 2% of the population is. You also need to be born with the facility for ballet along with the required musicality. Then you must train in a world class ballet school not a competition school or other recreational dance training. Professional schools are almost exclusively affiliate feeder schools to a professional ballet company. They screen you for being in that 2% or they won't train you. They also screen for age and training expected for that age. They will take a beginner with no training as old as 10 if they are in that 2%. On rare occasions they will consent to train a beginner as old as 12 or even 13 provided they were born with an extraordinary amount of gifts for ballet. If you are older than that and a beginner you have aged out of professional level training. Recital schools and competition dance schools don't have the right skills to pass on to you for a ballet career with competition training being far worse training for ballet as they push dance tricks over proper form. Dancers on track for a career in the ballet often dorm at their ballet school if they don't live close. They are either home schooled or get their academics as arranged by their ballet schools so they can take 20-30 hours of ballet technique classes a week year round and graduate high school early to dance in the ballet. There are dancers in that 2% who started young and got to train full time at world class ballet schools like The School of American Ballet who will never reach the professional ranks. There are so few jobs in the ballet. That being said who says you have yo be paid to enjoy ballet? Ballet careers don't pay well and are over in a flash. Then dancers need a second career for the remainder which is the bulk of their lives. Recreational ballet is for anyone of are age, shape and ability. If you are looking to learn ballet properly even on a recreational level find a good ballet focus school not a competition school. Try to take at least two but preferably three ballet classes a week to start. Don't worry about your weight as that doesn't matter in recreational training until you get to pointe work and partnering which is years down the road. FYI: "Ballerina" is the title reserved for the top female dancer in a professional ballet company. Most professional ballet dancers never earn that title. |
