| Question: Never getting Clara in Nutcracker? Posted: 15 Sep 2016 08:24 AM PDT In many productions , such as the Balanchine production done by NYCB, Clara/Marie is always performed by a young SAB student and is mostly a sit on stage and watch part. The best parts are Sugar Plum Fairy and Dew Drop. You have great parts. You have nothing to complain about. You may end up with a ballet career and perhaps for the dancer/dancers that gets to dance Clara this is the highlight of their recreational ballet career. You get cast not only for how you dance but your look. Perhaps you are too tall? The AD has to do what is best for the entire production. Everyone involved has to do what Is best for the production. If you ever do get a ballet career you will be disappointed about casting many times. At that professional level the lead goes to who fits the parts best as everyone is a great dancer or they wouldn't be in a professional ballet company. |

| Posted: 14 Sep 2016 03:23 AM PDT While ballet may help your RG they are actually somewhat counterproductive in terms of form. If you want a higher arabesque, you need to make sure you have the right form and you need strength. You could be very flexible and still not have a high arabesque. Make sure only your standing foot is in turnout and that you are not putting pressure on your back pinching your spine but have the thigh bone roll forward in the hip joint, glide and then spin. Here is a video that will show you how, but be sure to work with your teacher on this. ( starts at :40 into the video clip) https://youtu.be/ACuVnmS7h9A Regarding turnout, you have the turnout you were born with. The butterfly and frog can help open up what you have. You should never force your knees down as that will only torque your knees causing injury. The amount of turnout is dependant on your hip rotators and the debth of your joint where the pelvis and upper thigh bone meet. You cannot change that debth as that is bone structure. What you can learn to do is engage and hold what you have. Almost everything you do at the barre is meant to help with that if done correctly. Especially rond de jambe a terre. You must learn to engage the muscles deep within your hips and pelvic floor while wrapping your upper thighs outward. All the while in proper alignment making sure you never force your turnout. Knees over the toes. |
