| Question: How can I change my surname? Posted: 14 Sep 2016 02:01 PM PDT In the USA, you have to be at least 18 or have both parents' permission. You go to the county courthouse, fill out a form, pay a fee ($400 in California, less elsewhere). You may have to pay for a legal notice to run 1 - 4 times in a newspaper as well, depending on the state. After a number of weeks (again depending on the state) you go back to the court. If no one has objected, you get a decree. Next you go to the DMV, bank, Social Security Administration ... show them the decree and get a new license, new checks, new credit card, new SS card. For the rest of your life, when you apply for college or a loan, scholarship, job, passport, security clearance ..., you check "Yes" to the question "Have you ever used another name?", supply details, and, sometimes, a copy of that decree. You can't change your name to something outrageous - "Hitler", for instance - and you can't change it to avoid creditors. A family name - mother's maiden name, grandmother's maiden name, favorite aunt's/uncle's surname - is a safe bet. "Martin" is a safe bet too; everyone knows how to spell it, but it isn't so common there are 12 pages of them in the telephone book. |
