Question: How would this setting sound for a story book?

Nothing wrong with the island, but the "virus" sounds like a potion for crazy zombie sex. And isn't "miasma" just another word for a really bad smell?

EDIT: Yeah. I looked it up. An unpleasant smell or vapor. A fart is a miasma. You want your islanders to be afflicted with something equivalent to a fart?

I could see this as a serious book if the existence of the virus is questioned. Otherwise it just sounds like something for a horror movie.

Question: I want to make my character has a specialty at something?

Depends on the character. If your character is artistic, music or drawing would make sense. If your character is athletic, sports. It should be something your character really enjoys...otherwise he/she wouldn't have put the time and effort into it to make it a "specialty."

Unless your writing about some rich Victorian girl who is trained in womanly arts like embroidery and piano, then maybe the specialty could be something she really doesn't enjoy.

But yeah. You should ignore what comes to your mind, and think of what comes to your character's mind.
