| Question: I have a really embarrassing dance number and costume? Posted: 24 Mar 2015 09:41 PM PDT No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. We all have the same intrinsic value - meaning that at our core, we're all worth the same. No life is more valid or important than another. The people who bully you do it to make themselves feel powerful, superior, and better about themselves. That does not justify in any way, but you should realize that it has nothing to do with you. Their behaviour is not a reflection of who you are. They way they treat you does not say anything about you; it's a reflection of who THEY are. You have nothing to feel bad, guilty, or ashamed of. You are doing something very brave by doing this show - something that not a lot of other people would have the guts or courage to do. Be proud of that. Take ownership of who you are, and don't let anybody tell you how you should feel about yourself. You have to decide for yourself that you're worthy of love and deserving of good things, because YOU ABSOLUTELY are. You are enough. Dance for yourself. You're not on earth to please or impress people. You are perfect just as you are. Dance because you love it, dance to improve yourself, to be better than the dancer you were yesterday. Dance for joy and love of it. Dance because it's something you want to do for yourself. Don't let anyone push you from doing your own thing; at the end of the day, we only regret the chances we didn't take. Don't let fear hold you back. I was in a dance class with people so much younger than me, but you know what? I got to be their role model, and they were fun to be around, even if they were a little silly or childish at times. At the least I know that they accepted me for who I was and loved me without judgement. Again, you have nothing to feel ashamed of. If you're feeling nervous about the dance, find a quiet, empty space, and just sit and breathe for a bit. Remember that failure is not fatal, and even if you mess up, it's not the end of the world. Even professionals do. Even Sylvie Guillem, who is considered to be one of the greatest female ballet dancers of all time, has slipped onstage. The most important thing is that you keep going and enjoy what you're doing. Don't take life so seriously; no one gets out alive anyway. It's better to say "oops" than "I wish I did that." |
