| Question: What would they be to each other- 5th cousins? Posted: 22 Mar 2015 11:23 PM PDT John's great-great grandmother's sister is his great-great grandaunt. Let's call her Sally. Jane's great grandmother's brother is her great granduncle. Let's call him Henry. John and Jane are not related at all, because they have no common ancestor. They wouldn't even be considered "related by marriage" because that generally refers to marriages directly into your family: your aunt's husband is your uncle by marriage, but his sister has no relation to you because she didn't marry into your family. By the same token, John could say that Henry is his great-great granduncle by marriage, because Henry is married to John's great-great grandaunt Sally. But John has no relationship to Henry's sister, and therefore no relationship to her descendants (including Jane). However, even though John and Jane aren't related to each other, they would both be related to the children, grandchildren, etc. of Henry and Sally. Let's take Henry and Sally's great-grandchildren. They would be third cousins to Jane, and third cousins once removed to John. So even though John and Jane don't have ancestors in common, they do have cousins in common. But that doesn't make John and Jane related to each other. |
