| Posted: 25 Mar 2015 10:31 AM PDT You've got this @rse about face. You start with basic gear (a DSLR for example), and then learn the basics (exposure, lighting & composition). You then spend a few years putting that knowledge into practice (called 'gaining experience). During that time, you are adding to your gear collection with specialist lenses and maybe some off camera flash. THEN if you are competent and have talent, you consider starting a business. You would then need to consider market research and learning how to run a business, including contracts, and public liabiltiy/indemnity insurance. Why do you think you can just 'buy a camera a 'start a business', when you clearly have no clue about either. |
| Posted: 25 Mar 2015 10:06 AM PDT On top of being very good at photography, you will have to be pretty good with web design as well. You will need to register a domain name and space. You will either need to know how to design a website from scratch, or try to find usable templates (the better ones will cost). You should seriously take a look at your plan. You will be competing with thousands of free wallpaper sites that hold tens of thousands of images. I know what your plan probably is, but it simply will not work (been there, tried that). You will not be able to compete with these giant sites with your limited amount of photos that you legally own copyright to. You will not generate enough traffic that will make the work worth it, pay per impression and pay per click ads are not paying what they used to. People who do view your site will complain about the ads distracting from the photos (some of the ad publishers that work with small sites really pay low and have very obtrusive ads). Your visitors do not give two shits about supporting your work by viewing these ads. Think about all the bitching about ads online such as on Youtube or other sites. No one cares about supporting content, yet still want it for free. People are very LAZY. If you simply wish to have a gallery online for people to view, then look at Flickr or 500px. DeviantArt is a popular one among young people and you can allow the original to be downloaded for free (being ripped off for your hard work). Finally, how do you know you do have good photos that people will actually want to look at? This will be another element to consider. |

| Question: What are lenses for? Posted: 25 Mar 2015 08:20 AM PDT Basically, lenses in a camera focus the image onto the film or sensor, so that the image can be recorded. The lenses you need depend on the camera you have and what you need them for. There are different lenses for different things. The most basic of considerations is the focal length of the lens. Short focal lengths are for wide angle shots, and long focal lengths are for close ups.
