| Question: What are the meaning of the surnames Abbott and Mann? Posted: 26 Mar 2015 02:32 AM PDT Word history! Surnames are words they come from language origins, it is the people who use the words who come from random places or countries, who took the word as a surname from the language(s) the first ancestor of theirs to take/given that word as a surname. At the time of British taking surnames that was 800-900 yrs ago and the daily used languages heard in the UK at that time was Latin, Old French and Old English as well as Scandinavian and Germanic words used ( as English words) from previous centuries, very similar to today if we think of the word "forum", "School", "Computer" they are all Latin language words but we think of them as English words. Mann is pre 7th century Anglo-Saxon and Old German word "mann" meaning man, in pre 7th century England it was a personal/given name and still used until the 12th century. As the English language was spoken, heard and influenced three quarters of the World and people the World over took surnames at different times and from the language someone called Mann or Abbott could come from any country and never had any ancestry back to the Uk at all, surnames are no different to given names, so same as you never know the random place/country where individuals called Mary, Sarah, John, James came from |

The only way you could have a direct ancestral line to Mary of Scott's |
