Actually they do, they are called fine tuners and most every violin today uses one at least on the E string. But I think you meant, instead of the pegs. Well the answer is - Tuners Suck...just kidding. First of all, Uke strings are under much less tension.

The violin goes back 500 years when gut strings were the only strings that were used. Geared tuners didn't exist and wouldn't have worked anyway since the gear tuning is too fine. Strings didn't last very long and it would have been a major pain in the you know where to be using gears to install and remove gut strings. It wasn't until the 20th century that steel strings became available for the violin. So are you going to put screws into a 400 year old piece of art to attach tuners...I don't think so. The other issue is that tuners add weight, lots of it. When you have to stand there holding a violin up for hours, you don't want all that extra weight added to it. In the early 1900's tuners were made to be added to violins, but they were never popular for the reasons cited. Soon after that a different form of tuner, called the Champion peg, was developed and was a friction peg, the friction was against the side walls of the peg box, no screws, but still damage to the peg box. Jump to the 1960's or so, we see the Roth Glasser friction pegs, much better and reversible, although bigger peg holes are needed.

Fast forward to the 1990's and we get modern technology allowing for a standard shaped violin peg with an internal gearing to change up the ratio to make for easier tuning with steel strings without the need for fine tuners. EDIT: I am not necessarily advocating them, but here is the info. Of the two brands, the Wittners are much better.

Just remember, keep things in perspective you will not do too bad.
There is a realllly good excersize you can do called "The Bow", this will loosen you up. It really works.

Anyway, I have a persuasive speech on Weds, Im just bringing 2 shots of whisky to class! But that is not good if you really want ot be good at speeking.
