Question: Is this an english surname? Posted: 30 Mar 2015 04:20 PM PDT It can be an English language surname, it originates from the Latin Language word and was the personal name "Benedictus", meaning blessed...... the Latin language was the foundation language for many European languages and spoken across Europe, including the British Isles at the time of taking surnames, although surnames are just words and all originate from languages not countries and is not the way to find the origin of your ancestors. For that you will need to research the individual people in your ancestry who just happened to use the surname and many different unrelated people used the same surname

Question: How do you do genealogy? Posted: 30 Mar 2015 10:24 AM PDT First, pay attention to advice from persons who NORMALLY WORK with US records (which Maxi does not). The census in the US is open to 1940, unlike the UK where it is not open for 100 yrs. Yes, the census very much is a primary tool. It does have ERRORS, but that does not make it invalid as a source to find persons. One. Your birth certificate names your parents. You have the legal authority for that record. The only concern is if you are adopted, it will show the adoptive parents, not the bio parents. Adoption searches are a different ball game. IF your parents are not living, you get their death cert and yes, you have the legal right to that, as long as your birth cert includes them by name. From that.. you learn where to find documents about them..which DEPEND ON THE TIME, THE PERSON, THE PLACE. Next is learning to BE EXPLICIT in what you are hunting. If you were born in Texas in a certain time frame, you WILL BE ON THE TEXAS BIRTH INDEX. Each state has DIFFERENT requirements or records out there. If your parents died in the US, they normally will be on the social security death index. You can send for that file. You will get no where with blanket statements of "I can't get" or "everyone has these at home". Both are incorrect. It takes a bit of learning curve, which includes "where are death records for Okla for 1932?". Yes, you can. edit oh ...all genealogy is not online, by the way.
Question: How can i find out what my Real lastname is supposed to be? Posted: 30 Mar 2015 09:47 AM PDT " my Grandpa's dad, from my dads side was half black, half Native and was adopted into a white family, and got the lastname Davis given to him" So is that from proved, cited research ( do you hold a real record proving each event you say happened) or is it a family story and this is what you were told...as it sounds very much like you have no proof at all. So first off your REAL surname is your surname, it is just a word and does tell you anything at all else, it doesn't "belong" to any "bloodline", it is a word used to identify a person, just the same as a given name, it changes nothing about who your ancestors were whether you research them or not. Now if you want to research your ancestors... forget the story you were told, they are often incorrect and it will not change who your ancestors were, researched correctly you will know or you could hang on to your story and never know the truth.
Question: How do i find out if my deceased grandfather left me money and is well? Posted: 30 Mar 2015 09:29 AM PDT Damn you, auto-correct!! You obviously tried to type "IN HIS WILL" before your first cup of coffee. You contact the probate court in the county he lived in when he died. They will be able to tell you what to do. You may have to buy a copy of his will, instead of getting it for free. If he died without a will, there will be a legal document settling his estate; again, you will probably have to buy a copy. I have read a lot of wills from the 1700s and 1800s. People typically leave a token amount of cash and maybe a keepsake to their grandchildren, and the bulk of their estate to their spouse and children, so don't get your hopes up. The only common exception is if a child dies before a parent. For example, if I had children Albert, Bruce, Carol and Dorothy, and was a widower, and Carol had died giving birth to her twins Hezekiah and Helen 20 years before I drew up my will, I might bequeath 25% each of my property and cash to A, B and D, and 12.5% each to H&H. Please don't forget to choose a best answer. It doesn't have to be mine. 10 points aren't much, but they tell us you read the answers and we didn't flush 8 minutes of research and/or typing down the toilet.
