| Question: Starting pointe soon? Posted: 22 Mar 2015 01:05 AM PDT Your teacher should want to see your shoes to okay the fit before you wear them or sew the ribbons so that you can return them for a better fit if necessary. At that time she should show you where to put the ribbons and elastic and how to break them in. The purpose of the elastic is to keep the heel of the shoe from slipping off, therefore it is attached in a loop just big enough to slip your foot through when putting on the shoe, with the ends sewn in back, on either side of the back seam. Crossed elastics won't accomplish this purpose and are useless. The ribbons are attached at the point found by folding the heel forward as far as you can over the shank. Where the fabric folds is the point to sew the ribbons, as a beginner. Later, with more experience you will adjust this for your own needs. When you go for your fitting you can also ask these questions of your fitter. She and your teacher can show you where to flex the shank to break it in. It will be under your natural arch, and the object is to bring the shank close to your foot and provide a sort of shelf under your heel to support your foot. As for the box, you may want to squeeze it a bit to loosen it up, but that (and whatever padding you use) will really depend on the model of shoe you end up with.
