| Question: Geanological experts please? Last name origins? Posted: 24 Mar 2015 06:40 PM PDT Again NOTHING to do with genealogy. So surname hunting... the earliest records are 2 baptisms in 1734/35 in the UK then nothing else and bearing in mind that people took surnames in 1300-1400 in the UK that is 4 centuries too late and looking at it again they are American "collected/donated" information, approximately 150 yrs later records are all American and some claim to be from Russia, Poland, Austria, Syria BUT no records at all in any of those countries. So based on that it is an Americanised version of another word from another language. Fact is you say your ancestry is from Lebanon, so that is the "origin" of the people and genealogy is about the person not the word they use as a surname |

| Question: Help me please with a last name Origins? Posted: 24 Mar 2015 12:41 PM PDT Surnames are words and words come from languages not countries, people took surnames from the languages they heard, spoke or which influenced them and languages spread so can be heard/spoken in lots of different countries, it never means a person was from a particular country My surname is a French language word I have properly researched my ancestry and I have zero French ancestors... but ONE of the languages spoken at the time in the country of my ancestry, was the French langauge |
| Question: Is there anyway I can find out that I am a Catalan? Posted: 24 Mar 2015 11:59 AM PDT Your surname tells you NOTHING about your ancestry, a surname is a word and words come from languages, and that word is used in both languages and with respect ancestry.com is in the business of making money and attracting people to purchase subscription services, their unregulated entertainment DNA tests ( which tell you nothing about your ancestry) FACT: Unless you were born in Spain to at least one Spanish national you are not Spanish and Catalan is just a Provence in Spain, not a separate country, so you KNOW if you are Spanish or not. |
| Question: Origin of the last name "BECKER"? Posted: 24 Mar 2015 08:31 AM PDT Becker Name Meaning 1) Dutch, German, Danish, and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for a baker of bread, or brick and tiles, from backen 'to bake'. 2) English: occupational name for a maker or user of mattocks or pickaxes, from an agent derivative of Old English becca 'mattock'. | Question: I am wondering and hoping that RANNARD is a Huguenot surname. Can anyone help me? Posted: 23 Mar 2015 10:17 PM PDT That is not how genealogy research works and like asking if someone called John was Roman Catholic. Surnames tell you nothing about the country someone came from or the religion that they had, they are words, words come from languages and surnames were a choice ( given or taken) just the same as first names are, so if you wish to know who/what your ancestors were then you need to put the research in to find the records as a surname will not tell you. In so far a word history (which is nothing at all to do with genealogy) it is one of the many variants of the first name Reynard, a Germanic name, a given name basically means 'counsel-brave' and the name of the 'cunning fox' character in medieval plays used in France and surrounding EU counties and the UK for 1000+ yrs and the modern surname variants can be Ranyard, Reynard, Renhard, Rennard, Rannard and Renyard |
