| Question: Genealogy- how to look up birth of an Austrian what free websites to use? Posted: 21 Mar 2015 12:02 PM PDT That really depends on where in Austria you are looking for a 'birth' and what dates, there is no universal Austrian birth 'records' or index, you may need to look for a baptism which are of course parish records and so not only do you need to know the town/village but also the parish ..and do you read German as if not it is unlikely you will get very far as everything is not online and everything is certainly not free nor in English. So for example Vienna http://www.wien.gv.at/english/history/ar... |
| Question: How hard is it to find your ancestors? Posted: 21 Mar 2015 10:58 AM PDT Family history is all about researching and PROVING using real records and it takes a life time, it is not something you get done in 6 weeks or 6 months nor I have to say online as all records are NOT online and the ONLY records that are that you can trust are images, everything else is just a clue, a help, a hint and only used to find the real records to prove. Which it seems is why you are finding it difficult as "different information conflicting with each other" generally means you are not using real records and not proving, knowing the difference between primary and secondary records also helps and knowing that family stories you have heard are generally not true, so "when they immigrated here the people who fill out the information or whatever misunderstood and gave a different last name" that is not true, for several reasons, when people migrated they had to book their ticket using their official ID, the passenger list HAD to match or the company who brought them were fined and had to return them back at the companies cost, so they were very careful not to use the wrong name, the companies also employed native speaking officials so when the immigrant arrived they could speak their native language to people completely understood them........ now the immigrants once they arrived may have decided to change their own name and you will often find that in their naturalisation records showing both names, but that was their choice to make not someone elses, so your "someone" in the family telling you this is repeating a story they possibly were told, or thought it might be the case, but it is not true and a fairy story that is told by many descendant of immigrants. Now for me I want MY proved ancestors in MY cited tree, I don't want 'maybe' ancestors or 'could be' ancestors or "everyone else has then in their tree" ancestors, which means that my advice would be for you to start again simply as I have NEVER seen a tree that was "researched" online ( on ancestry or any other website) that was real bearing in mind that one wrong person in your tree means you are researching another family and none of those people are related to you. I have tested this out myself in researching using online only a line of my own ancestry and with 35yrs plus of experience after 4 hours I had several generations. Once I did it correctly and proved using real records then realised that I had only got 3 generations before going wrong so the next 5 generations were nothing to do with me. |
