A man and maid walked to a London bridge
forgetting to cast their breadcrumbs upon
the water of love and fortune's ending.
Upon the pier waited a pelican
with turquoise seaweed in its briny beak.
The man looked to the fowl, cast so profane
as a love with a briny seaweed beak.

Replenished, apathetic, scorned and mad
he tossed no breadcrumbs upon the water.
The woman sat upon her knees, poking.
Circles twirled from the stick, like saucers
covered with tea and crumbs, breadcrumbs, breadcrumbs.
The man saw this, and said no good love-word.
Instead he skipped a rock.

A smith works iron in the furnace of Alabaster molds
requiring of men the tempests of time
to swim out of temporal folds.
The blue, white and goldenrod liquid
spews from the forge, steaming the air
and causing the pavement to crack.

A mold of time comes
alabaster and crystal like a mollusk
a giant cuddle fish
to which the foolish say
"Aha! There is no..."
The other fools say, "Aha, it is..."
And the time morphed mollusk
shapes into folds like a rock.

What do the wise say?
They say it is beautiful
but they also point to the forger
for the foolish point to the squid
but the wise point to the man
who formed the alabaster mold.

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates.

The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.
