Question: What ballet shoes should I buy? What should I wear to my first ballet class? What will I learn in my first ballet class?

What ballet shoes should I buy? What should I wear to my first ballet class? What will I learn in my first ballet class?

I started ballet when I was three year old, and I stopped when I was six or seven. I am now twelve years old, and I am starting ballet again very soon. My mom called the director of my dance studio, and the director remembered me and was excited to have me back. My mom asked what I should wear, and the director said that I didn't need to worry about the uniform yet, and I could just wear shorts or someting comfortable for now. Any suggestions for what I should wear? Would jean shorts be okay? Also, she said I would need canvas/split ballet shoes. My dance studio doesn't sell them, and my mom and I are not sure where to buy them, and what exactly I need to get. I am in level 3, which is a level below my age group. There are six levels at my studio after primary, level 1,2,3,4,5a,5b. 12 year olds are generally in level 4, which you have to be approved by an insturctor to get in to. What would I be learning in the level 3 group? There is a level 3 strength training class for pointe afterwards. What would I do in that class? What level do you think pointe starts? Also, any tips for ballet? I'm a little nevous. I'm hypermobile, will that affect anything? I'm really flexible, but I can't do a straddle no matter how hard I try. Any tips for getting that straddle down? Also, how can I get in shape for ballet, and even though my turnout is already pretty good, how can I improve it? Sorry there are so many questions? I'm just really excited and nervous. Thanks for all the help!

Question: Would the Nutcracker be a good production to put on for beginner dancers and actors? Please answer asap?

Posted: 23 Aug 2014 12:18 PM PDT

My grandmother has own dance studio. She only has about thirty kids but she's also inquiring a lot of outside help from local church dance groups and other recreational studios. I was just wondering would this be a good Ballet to put on for beginner Ballet dancers? The ages run from Seven to high school age. These kids has excellent musicality however, dancing to traditional music maybe a little hard. We are attempting to put on a SMALL production of the Nutcracker.

I'm just asking if its a good idea because I don't want them to feel like they're being pushed, but they asked themselves if they could do the Nutcracker this year and I'm putting them up to the challenge. They have never had any acting classes and they barely know their left from their right when it comes dance. For the next four weeks I will be having them focus on technical skills and acting. They've also never danced with props.

So even just a hat on their heads may be an issue. So what I'm thinking about doing, is having them dance with props from the play for now on until they are comfortable enough with it. Am I starting off right? any advice? or do I just need to use the extra year to teach them these skills and put on the production next year even when I have the extra outside help that's required!

Any advice will do. However, please do not tell me I just can't flat out not do it. Cause these kids needs to be challenged. They're always doing the same dances and Ballet barre warm ups.

Update : Doing the same thing over and over again, isn't helping them as dancers. Yes, this is just recreational dance but if they really do want to go off to be in a real play produced by other recreational studios where an audition is held and cuts are made, they need to have the experience of what to expect. These kids has never even experienced an audition. So for this play, I'm going to have an evaluation audition so they can get the feel of what its like to be at an audition.

Update 2: again, even though this is recreational. I'm going to make this as professional as I can possibly make it. They need learn about professionalism. They're only a couple of dancers in there who I would recommend to audition for a summer intensive, I want to be to recommend all of them. Not just a few. So personally, starting off with their Ballet performance, I think this will be good enough for them to understand how serious Ballet should be taken.
