Question: Frustrated with guitar tuning?

Posted: 21 Aug 2014 08:21 PM PDT

do you have an Iphone/smart phone? they have tuner apps.

If you have old strings on your guitar then they simply won't got in tune and need to be changed. If they've been on there over 2-3 months they dead strings and won't hold a proper tuning. that's just how it goes with strings.

also your guitar might need some intonation adjustment for which you'd have to take it to someone who knew what they were doing.

Question: How to make my nails stronger for guitar?

drink milk

are you playing on steel/bronze or nylon strings. Usually fingernails are used on nylon strings which are much softer and have less tension.

If it's steel/bronze strings you're playing on it's best not to use your finger nails, but if you prefer that technique clip on finger picks like these might help:

Question: How does a bowed psaltery work?

Posted: 21 Aug 2014 07:36 PM PDT

Hi! Recently my mother bought a homemade bowed psaltery at a garage sale (very beautiful one). I've made it a recent goal of mine to learn to play it, along with some other instruments that I'm learning. I just had a few questions about it.

I understand that each side of the psaltery corresponds to notes on a piano, which I play. One side is white keys, and the other side is generally the black keys. Because it is designed this way, does that make the instrument in the key of C? If not, how can I find out what key it is in?
I believe this is a right-handed bowed psaltery, so the strings that are closer together are on the right. But, I'm a left-handed person. Can I still play the right-handed psaltery with my left hand?
Because it was bought at a garage sale, it's probably out of tune. I have a tuner, but I'm unsure of how to use it. How do I tune it exactly?
My last question is: where can I get some sheet music (preferably free)? I'm new at it, but I wouldn't mind beginner-intermediate kind of music. I've tried looking up some of these answers, but I haven't found one. Thanks to anyone and everyone who answers! :D
