| Question: Were diapers used during the Colonial Era? Posted: 27 Aug 2014 06:38 AM PDT Yes, it was called a clout. Referred to today as a diaper, in the 18th century the clout was made of linen diaper fabric and was either pinned with straight pins or tied with tapes. |
| Question: How were infants fed during the colonial era? Posted: 27 Aug 2014 06:32 AM PDT Although bottles were not unknown, most eighteenth-century women breast-fed their children for at least a year. In fact, breast-feeding became increasingly fashionable during the century. Queen Caroline, wife of George II of England, breast-fed all of her children. For those unable or unwilling to breast-feed, wet nurses could be hired to take over the task. A child's first solid food consisted of pap, a soft mixture of bread or meal moistened with milk or water, and sometimes laced with beer. Papboats were designed with spouts from which the pap could be fed directly into the child's mouth. |
