What you are referring to has always been misconstrued as a religious conflict, it was in fact a clash of civilisations, power politics being played out on a grand scale. At the end of the thirteenth century the biggest disaster that the Muslim world ever saw was the sacking of Baghdad by the Mongols. We did not discuss civil rights, we did not learn a thing about watergate, vietnam, women's liberation, or anything else beyond 1948. The subjects were too recent and no one could decide on HOW to teach them, so it was simply left out.
