Question: Dentist, actor, or writer?

Dentist, actor, or writer?

I am currently 17 years old have a deep passion for writing and acting. I started acting since i was 15 seriously but deep down to the bone ive always known i wanted to do something with it. I am very involved with my schools drama program and have starred in a bunch of production as lead roles. I love it so much and there is nothing i'd rather do. I also love to write and have produced some of my fiction plays in school. However my parents would never support me in it. I am looking at colleges that have a great pre dental program because i feel like its something that would satisfy my financial needs and also take a bit of interest in it. Personally i wouldnt mind being a dentist, but my dream is to continue to study acting.Im looking at colleges like NYU and University of Chicago. Because i plan on auditioning for the actors studio in NYU and the yale drama program for my graduate degree after my bachelors where i can hopefully minor in theatre.I dont care what people think about my major, ill probably do something in biological science because i know that when it comes to my future i need a safe and reliable job. However, do you guys think that is a smart idea? what should i do if i do get excepted into a big drama school for my graduate degree? Would bailing on dental school be worth it? My parents would kill me :/ idk what to do please help!
If my parents find out i want anything to do with acting as a career or further education they wont support me financially :((((((

Question: How to Become a Better Actor?

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 08:05 PM PDT

Practice anywhere and everywhere. Whether it be alone in your bedroom. I could sit hours in front of the mirror practising different roles, reactions, accents. Acting is a skill and you are never too late to start, but it does take hard work, practise and commitment. Try that and audition as much as possible. Be actively involved and you will get it! i believe in you!

Question: How can I be ready for my acting interview?

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 07:29 PM PDT

This would normally be an audition with potentially a few questions as well. Having said that and with the little information you have provided I can offer the following.

Be very well prepared by knowing your audition pieces inside out and back to front (as well as the source of the pieces). Enter and exit the audition area confidently. Speak or sing your pieces clearly and at a level that can be easily heard by the panel. Be polite and friendly and acknowledge any accompanist involved (pianist).

If you are clear (no mumbling), polite and confident you will be streets ahead of most other young people auditioning. Know why you are at the interview/audition - they may ask what you are aiming for. Best of luck.

Daughter studies full time at well known acting school (years of youth theatre, vocal studies, performing arts high school before that).
