Books like Game of Thrones (a song of Ice and Fire)?

I've been looking for books (even shows) that are like Game of Thrones in their intensity. Fantasy and/or historical books are preferably but anything really that provokes same emotionally rollercoaster as the Song of Ice and Fire series will do. Like stories where the characters are complex and you never know who will die next, everyone (even main characters) are at risk. Does anyone know of any books (or movies, or shows) that are like this?

Question: Books like Percy Jackson?

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit living in the Shire. He has never been on any adventures and is quite happy to leave it that way. However, all this changes when the wizard Gandalf the Grey comes to his home along with a band of 13 dwarves, and Bilbo is whisked away on their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the Dragon Smaug. We will see how Bilbo changes throughout the story during three major plot events.
