| Posted: 18 Sep 2014 05:49 PM PDT Ethnic background is not the same as your birthplace. For instance, there are people whose ethnic background is Chinese, even though their families have been in San Francisco, California since roughly 1852. It's composed of the language you speak at home, the kinds of food you eat, the holidays you celebrate, the religion you practice, and your customs. There are people in many European countries, and the USA, Canada, Australia, etc who identify first as "Jewish" (which is sticky, because it is a religion as well) or "Chinese" or "Italian" before they identify as citizens of those countries. How you find where your ancestors were born is the sport of genealogy. It takes 100 - 300 hours to get back to people alive in 1850 or the immigrant, whichever comes first, for white Americans. (Only 1870 for black ones, sadly.) You can make a stab at it by asking your grandparents where THEIR grandparents were from. Your teacher has no way to check, unless he/she is going to devote 100 - 300 hours for each student, so anything reasonable will do. If your last name is Rigatonni, to make a humorous example, we know that at least one of your great great grandparents was from Italy, not Sweden. |
| Question: Are these high, average, or low European ancestry scores for DNA ancestry test? Posted: 18 Sep 2014 05:29 PM PDT For an African-American, like myself, are these high, average, or low European ancestry scores for an African-American for a DNA Tribes Europa Panel dna test? TribeScore: Each match also includes a TribeScore in parentheses, listing your MLI score's percentile in that population. TribeScores compares your MLI or Match Likelihood Index scores to members of each ethnic group and world region. TribeScores of (0.05) and above are within the expected genetic range for that population; TribeScores of (0.25) and above are within the typical genetic range for members of that population. Here are my top 3 results: Portuguese (0.20) 197.25 |
