Question: Piano Audio Recording Help? (Live Baby Grand)?

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 07:46 PM PDT

Hi, I am thinking about doing some recordings of myself playing piano. I will be requesting use of a baby grand piano at my high school in a good sized theater (1200 seats), but I don't know how I should set up mikes.

I read a bit from the following article and have a baseline for a couple of things:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan08/articles/pianorecording_0108.htm

I have an Audio-Technica ATR1200 Dynamic Cardioid mike with a frequency response from 80 to 12,000 Hz and sensitivity of -59 dB. Based on my reading I'm planning on putting this under the piano because the E2 key has a frequency of 82.4069 Hz and I don't believe I'll be playing below that very often, so this mike will bolster the bass.

I also have two similar Sony HandyCams. I cannot find their frequency responses online or in the manual. One of them will be pointed at the piano strings from just outside the lid looking in (because I'd like some video shots too), and one will be above the keys recording video of me playing (and whatever audio it gets there, probably not much)

My question is how does this setup sound? I have considered putting the ATR-1200 mic on the frame inside the piano itself, but I'm not quite sure. Plus I'm not sure how far the HandyCams should be from the piano. If you have any comments or suggestions that'd be awesome.

Thanks for your help:)

Question: Blending as a trumpet? (In a band)?

Blending as a trumpet? (In a band)?

Okay, so my band director often tells the band that we need to blend with another. I know this means I need to adjust my sound, but I am not sure exactly what I need to be doing technique wise. I would ask my director except when another student asked him he would just yell a lot and give some unspecific answer saying that we need to listen to each other to blend with each other. Thanks!

Question: How does somebody go from pretending to be a professional guitar player for several years, to actually knowing how to play?

Posted: 14 Sep 2014 06:37 PM PDT

An interesting question, lots of fuzziness. In a sense, many young players "pretend" to pro-level, just not knowing how far they fall short, probably self included, circa 1964, when I started to actually get paid for playing. As time goes by, one then bangs up against a "faster gun", like a truly good player with a good act, goes home and stares out the window, and then either commits to really getting better, or just avoiding further significant contact with those that are.

It's also quite possible to be a professional performer or entertainer, "holding" a guitar, without knowing how to play the guitar well. I could offer a number of examples who, in my opinion, do that, or even have some fans following that consider them good players, even tho they are only good at posing. But I won't, as I would just piss off any number of these fans.

Here's a very old clip showing a little studio jam offered by a fairly good standing rocker at the time (Dave Edmunds), giving a young wizard (Albert Lee) some air. Dave just met the fastest gun in town, and respects it. Not a bad reaction.

Question: Opera schools/conservatories in the USA or abroad for OPERA IN PARTICULAR? Good for undergrad also?

Opera schools/conservatories in the USA or abroad for OPERA IN PARTICULAR? Good for undergrad also?

First off I should probably say that I am finishing high school early, and some schools don't want to take me. Don't try to convince me to stay in highschool by the way, there's no use in it, I've made my decision because I need to move on with my life. Oh..and I'm 15. I'll be 16 by fall of 2015.
I am wondering what would be the best program for undergraduate opera studies at the moment? I have been looking at Julliard and Mannes and some other schools as well, but I'm just wondering if anyone could give me another perspective? Opinions? Also, I will post a link to my most recent video of me singing at Interlochen Arts opera summer program... Please watch the video before you post your answer, when you see the video, you'll see that I am not a chorusgirl. I don't work well with choral work, so doing 4 years of it won't be helpful...
So...yes... Sorry this is all a little rushed. I'm just really trying to find the right school for me!

Thank you very much for your help to anyone who answers!! I love you all!! :)

Question: What is the musical term for an improvised introduction to a song?

What is the musical term for an improvised introduction to a song?

When a performer plays a little improvised prelude to a song that sets the mood or melodic theme. Usually it's in free time and is kind of like a soundscape. Someone told me the term once and I think it starts with an M.
