Question: I need help finding inexpensive Jay Gatsby costumes, clothing, and accessories.?

Yeesh.....that's a tallish order there. Thrift stores. Don't know where you live, but if you're in SoCal, you would want to check out the thrift stores where more affluent people live...that white suit won't be so white in the junkier stores. The tie you may have to get new....discount stores like Ross, TJMaxx, Marshall's or just Walmart. I'll give you links to idea spots....you're gonna have to do the searching if you want it on the cheap. Tiffany did the jewelry (they sell the daisy signet ring he wore). Brooks Brothers has a whole line of Gatsby. Those saddle/spectator shoes....man...that's a tough one. Everyone is selling new ones for a kabillion bucks....You might have to get tennies and glue brown leather cutouts on them or something to get the look. Pinterest has a lot of stuff and Etsy too.

Question: Would this be good on a acting resume?

Posted: 08 Sep 2014 09:49 PM PDT

Nothing you did in high school should go on a professional acting resume. Especially not a lot of really bit parts like "child" or "chorus". You wouldn't even put those down on a resume for most community theatre auditions (but some community theatres won't require you to bring an actual resume, but they may just have you fill out a form where you can summarize any performing experience you might have had). For your college audition, again, give them a resume if they request one, but just put down some of your "name" roles like Mrs. Potts. You'll probably end up in the chorus again, but it's a start. But you never know! Just make sure you pick out an appropriate song and/or monologue and do as well as you can. It depends on who else is auditioning for the play.

I also suggest you find out the actual name of the play, and what it is about, and what kind of music is in it. That way you can plan appropriate audition material. Perhaps that might be what's holding you back. Maybe you have plenty of talent, but you don't pick material that shows them what they need to see to consider casting you.

Your "performing arts" class was just for fun, and not to be considered actual training of any sort unless some sort of actual instruction took place.

Question: Sheet music, what is it, how does it work, & is it something I should be worried about considering my interests?

Yes, the lead sheet is a fairly basic description of the song. The musicians or arranger has some leeway in how to play the chords indicated.

Unless you were the music director or leader, you wouldn't need to be too concerned about them, other than knowing what they are, that you have the sheets that are needed, and that the musicians are competent to use them.

It is really good that you are acquiring some musical training. I presume that you are not going to pursue that to the point where you are a well-trained professional musician. Whatever role you have in production, it's likely a more highly trained musician would be responsible for using the lead sheets. If you expect to be that person, then by the time you get the training you need, you will know all about them. Ask your music teach how they would be used. That would likely be more informative than what you might get here.

I'm not competent enough to tell you they ways that they could be used. You seem to have a good idea already: play those chords, choosing appropriate inversions, etc. (The top notes of the inversions might be used to reinforce the melody, e.g.).

I hope you go a long way in music. I love music. But you sound like you are at a very early stage, with a long way to go. Your drive and curiosity should help you a lot.

I'm not trying to discourage or disparage what you are doing. Just suggesting you don't get too far ahead of yourself. You don't say how long you have been working at piano, but if you are at the "latter stages" of your training, I suspect it's not conservatory-level training you are referring to. I really wish you a lot of success.
