So there is a guy in my class and i only know his last name. I've heard his first name before and it sounds a little Hawaiian. His last name is Hindi. Now I'm not sure if it's Hindi Hindy Hendi Hende Hendy Hinde Hende or any other form of the spelling. So anyone know anything? |
| Question: This might be confusing, but what would be a good nickname for an older sibling? Posted: 12 Sep 2014 11:17 AM PDT Genealogy is the study of family history – our ancestors. It's about tracing our family trees back through the generations. It's not about nicknames, what to call babies, getting blood tests, tracing living relatives – nothing of that sort. |
| Question: Which last names have notably been middle class+ the longest? Posted: 12 Sep 2014 09:44 AM PDT Europeans as a rule did not have surnames until the first part of the 2nd millennium. They weren't started to identify a person as a member of a family but just to better identify him, often times for taxation purposes. There were just too many men with the same given name in the same town or village and they had to have away of figuring who was who. When they got through it wasn't impossible for legitimate sons of the same man to wind up with a different surname and still each could have shared his with others with no known relationship. Surnames are classless. Now some surnames we come to associate with wealth. However if John D Rockefeller hadn't made a fortune and he and his descendants were store clerks, bricklayers etc their name would still be Rockefeller. Also some people might have a name that is associated with a noble family simply because they had an ancestor that worked for a noble family and when surnames were taken they took the name of their employer or maybe they lived close to the palace of a noble family. So in the long run surnames do not indicate class. Surnames do not have a family history despite the fact that there are numerous peddlers of surname products that want to make you believe they do. Those are the scam merchants who sell surname history scrolls, so called family crest or family coats of arms. A crest is usually a 3 dimensional bird or beast on top of the helmet of a coat of arms. Coats of arms do not belong to families but were/are awarded to individuals. A good way to tell that coat of arms was purchased from a surname product peddler is it will have a surname on a scroll underneath and sometimes over it. |
