Question: Why does the year 1000 mark a good date to end the Early Middle Ages?

Because by then the process of ending all would-be successor states to Rome had been completed, and europe had become subdivided into fiefdoms. The early middle ages, in western Europe, had seen attempts to revive Roman power or emulate it--the East Roman conquests of the 6th century and Charlemagne's empire being examples. But by 1000 such attempts had failed utterly. 1000 did see the so called holy roman empire but it affected mostly just Germany, and was often not really an empire. The early middle ages ended about 1000 and the high middle ages began because by then the politically subdivided or feudal system characteristic of the middle ages had become established. Essentially all vestiges of political centralization of the past were gone, especially in France and Britain.
